Understanding how those mechanisms work isn't just interesting. It's practically useful. Knowing what makes a reward loop tick — and knowing when it's working against you — is the difference between playing a game and being played by one.

Set items were scattered across the entire game with no guarantee of completion. By every metric of modern engagement design, it should have been a failure.
But the scarcity created a culture. Finding a Shako or a Windforce wasn't just a personal win — it was an event. People talked about drops. They remembered them. The items had identities because they were rare enough to be meaningful and distinct enough to change your build in real, tangible ways.
The reward loop worked because the rewards justified the loop. That's a harder design target to hit than it sounds.
Case Study: Where Anthem Fell Apart
Anthem is the cautionary tale that every loot game designer should be required to study. BioWare's 2019 shooter had a genuinely compelling gameplay loop — the flying, the combat, the visual design — and a loot system that completely undermined it.
The problems were layered. Drop rates for meaningful gear were vanishingly low, but the gear that did drop was often statistically indistinguishable from what players already had. The affixes were confusing, the power scaling was opaque, and — most damningly — the developers shipped a patch that accidentally reduced Masterwork drop rates to near zero and didn't catch it for weeks.
But the structural problem ran deeper than any single bug. Anthem's loot system created a loop where the grind felt punishing without the payoff feeling earned. When the grind length exceeds reasonable session design. Every game has a different acceptable grind threshold based on its audience and genre. But when developers deliberately inflate time-to-reward to drive daily logins and session length metrics — rather than because the content itself warrants it — the system is optimizing for engagement data rather than player experience. You can usually feel the difference.
When failure states feel punishing rather than instructive. A healthy loot loop makes bad runs feel like learning experiences or acceptable variance. An exploitative one makes them feel like wasted time. The difference often comes down to whether there's meaningful progression even on a bad run — resources, fragments, crafting materials — or whether a failed attempt leaves you with nothing.
When the complexity serves confusion rather than depth. Some loot systems are genuinely complex in rewarding ways — Path of Exile's passive tree and crafting systems reward deep investment with deep mastery. Others are complex in ways that obscure how the system actually works, making it harder for players to make informed decisions about their time. Complexity that serves the player is depth. Complexity that serves the developer's retention numbers is obfuscation.

- Do I know what I'm working toward? If the answer is no, the system lacks a goal structure that respects your time.
- Does a bad run still feel like progress? If the answer is no, the variable reinforcement isn't balanced by sufficient forward momentum.
- When I get a drop, do I feel something? If the answer is no, the items lack the differentiation needed to make drops feel like events.
- Am I playing because I want to, or because I feel like I'll fall behind if I don't? If the answer is the latter, the system may have crossed into obligation design — which is the gateway to burnout.
