Once you earn a piece of gear, it's yours forever — a trophy, a stat stick, an inventory item you'll carry across hundreds of hours without ever worrying about it again. That philosophy has become so standard that questioning it feels almost heretical.
I'm questioning it anyway. And I think if you're honest about the state of modern RPG loot systems — the overflowing inventories, the meaningless drops, the decision fatigue that makes you want to log off rather than engage — you'll at least hear me out.
Durability systems and gear degradation mechanics deserve a serious second look. Not the punishing, poorly-implemented versions that gave the concept a bad reputation, but the thoughtful, tension-building implementations that some of today's best survival and hardcore games are quietly proving out. The argument isn't that every game needs gear decay. The argument is that the genre's complete abandonment of the mechanic has created problems that nothing else seems to be solving.
Why Forever Loot Creates a Specific Kind of Problem
When gear never breaks down, never degrades, and never needs replacing, something subtle but important shifts in how players relate to their equipment. The acquisition moment — the drop, the craft, the reward — carries all the emotional weight. Everything after that is maintenance. You get the dopamine hit, you slot the item in, and then it disappears into the background of your build, permanently.

The decision to bring your best kit into a high-risk area is loaded with tension precisely because that kit isn't permanent — it's an investment that can be lost or degraded. That tension is the game. Remove it and you have something fundamentally less interesting.
DayZ and the broader survival genre built entire player economies around the wear-and-tear of equipment. The search for repair kits, the decision to patch up a damaged item versus finding a replacement, the risk calculus of using something you can't easily replace — these aren't annoyances. They're the texture of the experience.
Even Minecraft, which most people don't think of as an RPG, uses durability in a way that creates meaningful decision points. The enchanted tool you've invested in isn't a permanent asset — it's a consumable with a long lifespan, and that distinction changes how you use it.
The Inventory Hoarding Problem Decay Systems Would Actually Fix
Here's the argument that I think lands hardest for anyone frustrated with modern RPG loot design: gear decay is one of the few mechanics that naturally solves inventory bloat without requiring artificial storage limits.
Right now, most RPGs handle the "too much loot" problem through external constraints — inventory caps, weight limits, bag upgrades. These solutions treat the symptom rather than the cause. Players hoard gear because gear is permanent and potentially valuable forever. If you might need it later, you keep it. The result is the overstuffed inventory situation that's become a meme across the genre.
In a system where gear degrades, the calculus changes organically. You don't hoard items that are already halfway worn down because they have a finite useful lifespan. You develop a more practical relationship with your equipment — use it, maintain it, replace it when it's no longer cost-effective to keep repairing. This also restores meaning to the crafting and loot systems. When gear is permanent, a new drop only matters if it's an upgrade. The Design Challenge: Integration, Not Addition

I'm not arguing that every RPG should become Escape from Tarkov. The hardcore survival audience and the casual RPG audience have different tolerances for friction, and that's fine.
